OAP to face court over claim he killed six-year-old boy with an airgun

A 77-year-old man is to face an allegation of manslaughter following the death of a six-year-old boy from a "pellet gun" injury.

Stanley Metcalf was found injured at a property on Church Lane in Sproatley, East Yorkshire, on July 26 last year.

Police said that the boy's "tragic" death was confirmed at around 5.30pm on the same day after he had been taken to the Hull Royal Infirmary.

An inquest opening at Hull Coroners' Court last year heard how the six-year-old died after incurring a "pellet gun" injury, suffering a hole to the side of his abdomen.

On Wednesday, Humberside Police said Albert Grannon had been summonsed to court to face allegations of manslaughter and possession of a firearm without a certificate in relation to the death.

The force said that Grannon will appear before Hull Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

Bodies of two women found dead in chest freezer have fused together

In a statement issued following Stanley's death, his family described him as being "vibrant and full of energy".

They said: "We are absolutely devastated and completely heartbroken without Stanley and it still doesn't feel real we won't see his happy, smiling face again.

"There are no real words to express how the loss of Stanley has affected us and we all miss him so much.

"Stanley was a loving, caring and beautiful boy."

A ban on airguns came into force in Scotland in 2017 unless the owner applies for a special licence.

The Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 made it a criminal offence to have an airgun without a licence or permit.

The law was introduced after several high-profile incidents involving the weapons.

One of the most infamous came in 2005 when Glasgow toddler Andrew Morton died after being shot in the head with an airgun by 27-year-old Mark Bonini.
