OAP murderer robbed petrol station with Buckie bottle

A killer who murdered a defenceless old man during a botched robbery - held up the same petrol station twice in one day.

Callous John Paul Merenghi struck the first time, threatening a worker with a Buckfast bottle, hours later he returned, this time brandishing a pair of sissors.

The thug struck 10 years after being released from a life sentence for the murder of 82-year-old Henry Simpkins in Cardonald.

He was just 20 years old when he strangled and suffocated the frail old man during a raid on his flat in 1992.

He bound Mr Simpkins' hands, stabbed him multiple times with a compass in the arms, throttled him, then bound a pillow to his face with his dressing gown cord and left him for dead.

He was found guilty and sentenced to life behind bars, before being released in 20009.

The High Court in Glasgow heard today that Merenghi threatened a worker with a Buckfast bottle at the BP garage in Hamilton on September 16 last year.

The 48-year-old yelled: "Open the till or I will smash it off your head."

The thug managed to grab around £300 before fleeing the scene.

But, hours later, Merenghi was back this time threatening another employee with a pair of scissors.

Prosecutor Blair Speed said he was wearing the same trainers from earlier.

Merenghi this time got £235 and three packets of cigarettes.

He was soon traced by police, but denied being the culprit.

Mr Speed: "He said he had not been at the service station for three weeks."

Police went on to find the Buckfast bottle and one of the cigarette packets.

Merenghi pled guilty to two charges of assault and robbery at the High Court in Glasgow.

Lord Braid remanded him in custody and sentencing was deferred until next month.
