OAP conned out of four-figure sum as police make fraud warning

Lanarkshire Police are warning locals of scammers after an elderly man was conned out of a four-figure sum of money.

The victim, who stays in Lanark, was defrauded after he answered his mobile phone to someone asking him to transfer money to a new account.

The caller told the man he was from the fraud investigation branch of his bank when targeted on May 4.

He then proceeded to tell him his account had been compromised and to log into his mobile banking app to transfer the money to a new account.

Cops have now urged residents to stay alert for this type of scam, with officers stressing that no bank will ever ask customers to transfer money into a safe account.

They further advise that if you are in any doubt, hang up and call your bank using the telephone number on the back of your bank card.

You can report fraud by calling Police Scotland on 101.
