Controversial Oakden nursing home closing as last two residents moved out

The trouble-plagued Oakden Aged Mental Health Care Service will be closed to residents from today.

The final two patients from the disgraced Oakden nursing home in Adelaide's north will be moved out today and the facility shut down.

The aged mental health facility was scheduled for closure earlier this year after the state's chief psychiatrist uncovered abuse and neglect dating back 10 years.

The Makk and McLeay wards were closed in June, while today's closure of Clements House will start the site's decommissioning.

South Australia's ICAC is investigating whether State Government ministers or public servants committed maladministration during the handling of the scandal.

SA Mental Health Minister Peter Malinauskas said nobody would be sorry to see the Oaken site closed down.

"There will be nobody in the Oakden facility [and] we won't be taking any more patients, which means we can start decommissioning the site next week," he said.

"That'll be an important step in making sure we close this terrible chapter in the state's history when it comes to providing care for older people suffering a mental illness."

Residents have been transferred to the nearby Northgate House and other care providers, while a scoping study is underway for the site and design of a new $14.7 million healthcare facility.

Anti-corruption commissioner Bruce Lander earlier this year wanted the right to conduct public hearings during his investigation, but SA Parliament knocked back his requests.

SA Attorney-General John Rau argued secrecy provisions should remain because during maladministration investigations ICAC was effectively using the powers of the ombudsman, who is prevented by law from conducting investigations in public.

Opposition attorney-general spokesperson Vickie Chapman later introduced a private member's bill to give Mr Lander the powers he requested, but it was defeated 23 votes to 20 in the House of Assembly.
