O2 customers sent fake messages asking for payment details in new scam

O2 customers are being urged to look out for a new payment scam being sent out by fraudsters.

Criminals have been texting bogus messages asking people to update their bank details after a payment failed to go through.

The text customers are receiving reads: "O2: Payment for your latest bill could not be processed by your bank. Please update your information".

It then links to a a fake website, where criminals will steal your details to use themselves, The Mirror reports.

A spokesperson from O2 said: "This looks to be an example of an SMS phishing (smishing) scam where fraudsters will send out fraudulent links in the hope that a customer clicks and enters personal details."

"O2 would never email, text or call customers and ask for a one-time code, password, or other security information set up on their O2 account."

If you are sent a suspicious text, report it to O2 on by forwarding it to 7726.

You can report it to ActionFraud or email the Government's new phishing report service:  report@phishing.gov.uk
