O'Leary salute, Revie tracksuits, Bielsa celebrates: Leeds United moments you missed

Leeds United’s 1-0 win over Birmingham City on Saturday was preceded by plenty of pomp and ceremony as the club brought the curtain down on its centenary celebrations.

We take a look through some of the moments you may have missed from Saturday’s game.

O’Leary salute

While you may not have missed the catalogue of legends who walked out into Elland Road’s centre circle pre-match, you may not have spotted David O’Leary’s classy touch.

Howard Wilkinson, Gordon Strachan, Jermaine Beckford, Paul Robinson and Norman Hunter were just some of the others acknowledging the crowd too.

However, we spotted O’Leary making sure the Don Revie Stand could see him do the Leeds Salute in their direction.

It was a nice touch from the man behind all those glorious European nights at the start of the century.

One of many nods to the past

One of the most memorable aspects of the Revie era at Elland Road was the names the players wore on the back of their tracksuits.

On Saturday, the entire starting XI walked out onto the field in white tracksuit jackets with their full names printed on the back.

After shaking hands with the Birmingham players they walked over to the East Stand and waved as the Revie side used to, with a 100 mural being held up by the spectators.

Marcelo Bielsa’s celebration

In the heat of the moment, it’s easy to focus on the goal scorer, the team’s celebration or even your keyboard in the press box’s case.

However, the LS11 team have got us covered when it comes to the way most satisfying fist pump inside Elland Road when Phillips struck on Saturday.

EFL keeps up appearances

Anyone who follows the Whites will be familiar with the narrative many fans buy into when it comes to the EFL and its relationship with the club.

Spygate and the £200,000 fine was just one chapter in a long book of incidents which have made United fans feel unduly hard done by.

Anyway, not one to miss a photo opportunity, the EFL saw fit to send Shaun Harvey’s replacement, and United fan, Debbie Jevans down to Elland Road on Saturday with a token, nondescript glass award to give to Andrea Radrizzani.

She said: "It’s very, very special to be a part of today and it’s another full house at Elland Road.

"The atmosphere outside the ground and around the whole place today is simply amazing.

“Everyone’s been talking about this week and the celebrations and how great it is to have all the old players back reliving the history of this club.

“It’s very special to be a part of it and Leeds are just one of many great clubs we have in the EFL.”
