O’Hooley & Tidow: Shadows review – a stately affair

Belinda O’Hooley and Heidi Tidow
‘A mix of the tender and the acerbic’: Belinda O’Hooley (left) and Heidi Tidow.

This Yorkshire duo have become a redoubtable fixture in British folk, though their music now owes little to tradition beyond their close harmony singing and much more to Belinda O’Hooley’s rippling neoclassical piano – the title track is a spontaneous solo instrumental. As usual, their songs are a mix of the tender and the acerbic. There are celebrations of Yorkshire scenery and folk, including cycling legend Beryl Burton, alongside an unflinching look at child abuse on Reapers and an odd but effective number about orphaned elephants in Blanket. There are splashes of drums and brass but it’s mostly a stately affair, not least on the standout The Pixie, concerning the woman who taught morris dancing to first world war troops.
