O'Hare noise commission new chairman nominated

Jan. 30--Mount Prospect Mayor Arlene Juracek has been nominated to serve as chairman of the O'Hare Noise Compatibility Commission, replacing former Arlington Heights Mayor Arlene Mulder, who is not seeking re-election to the post, officials said Thursday.

Juracek was selected this week by the commission's ad hoc nominating committee, which also slated Joseph Annunzio, who is village attorney in Niles, to serve as vice chairman.

Commission members, who represent 54 municipalities and school districts near O'Hare International Airport, will vote on the proposed new leadership March 13. The term of each officer is one year.

Mulder has been chairman since the noise commission was created in 1997.

She has been heavily criticized in recent years by noise-weary residents who contend she has not advocated effectively on their behalf with the airlines serving O'Hare and the Chicago Department of Aviation, which is working to complete new runways with the goal of increasing flights at the airport from a total last year of about 882,000 flights to more than 1.2 million in the years ahead.

The ongoing reconfiguration of O'Hare's airfield has changed flight paths, with the effect of increasing air traffic east and west of the airport.
