Nzingha Stewart has been announced as the director for the first episode of the highly anticipated Amazon Prime Video series adaptation of 'We Were Liars.' The series, which was acquired by Prime Video in March 2023, is based on the popular E. Lockhart YA novel of the same name.

Described as a blend of a tragic love story and an amnesia thriller, the series is set on a privately owned island off the coast of Massachusetts. The cast includes Mamie Gummer, Caitlin FitzGerald, and Candice King in leading roles.

Stewart, known for her work as an executive producer and director on Prime Video's 'Daisy Jones and the Six' and the upcoming series 'Cross,' has an impressive track record in television. Her directing credits also include well-received shows such as 'Little Fires Everywhere,' 'From Scratch,' 'Inventing Anna,' 'Maid,' and 'Grey's Anatomy.'

In the film realm, Stewart directed the popular Netflix movie 'Tall Girl' and is set to helm 'Life in Motion' for New Line. Additionally, she co-wrote 'The Bad Ass Biker Chicks of Marrakech' with Lindsay Cohen.

'We Were Liars' is written and executive produced by Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie, with Plec penning the first episode and MacKenzie handling the second. Emily Cummins from Plec's My So-Called Company is also on board as an executive producer, along with Lockhart. Universal Television is the studio behind the adaptation.

The original novel has been a commercial success, selling nearly 3 million copies worldwide and spending over 40 weeks on the New York Times YA bestseller list. The anticipation for the series adaptation is high, given the popularity and acclaim of the source material.
