A New Zealander who went missing after setting out for a swim in the Brisbane River has been found safe and well, police say.

Tane Huffman, 32, went swimming by himself near Kholo Creek, southwest of Brisbane, on Saturday morning.

He was reported missing on Sunday morning after failing to contact his family or return to the rural property where they are staying.

Mr Huffman's disappearance prompted police and SES personnel to initiate a search of the river on foot, boats and vehicles including ATVs.

Residents in the area were asked to check their properties and yards for Mr Huffman, who is described as Caucasian, tall, with a slim build, long beard and was last seen wearing only swim shorts.

Late on Sunday evening, police reported Mr Huffman had been located and thanked the local community for their assistance in the search.
