Wordle hints (game #1599) - clue #1 - Vowels

How many vowels does today's Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in three places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #1599) - clue #2 - first letter

What letter does today's Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today's Wordle answer is V.

V is a fairly uncommon starting letter in Wordle. There are only 43 answers that begin with a V, and it ranks just 16th.

Wordle hints (game #1599) - clue #3 - repeated letters

Does today's Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are repeated letters in today's Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

Wordle hints (game #1599) - clue #4 - ending letter

What letter does today's Wordle end with?

The last letter in today's Wordle is E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That's one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Wordle hints (game #1599) - clue #5 - last chance

Today's Wordle answer (game #1599)

  • NYT average score: 4.1
  • My score: 4
  • WordleBot's score: 4
  • My skill score: 91
  • My luck score: 56
  • My start word performance: ESTER (33 remaining answers)
  • WordleBot's start word performance: SLATE (120)
  • Tomorrow's start word: QUACK

Today's Wordle answer (game #1599) is… VENUE.

When is a poor start word a good start word? Why, today of course – for me at least.

When my random word generator served up ESTER I gave (yet another) sigh. Once again I had to play a word with a repeated letter, essentially restricting me to gaining information about four letters rather than five. But here, that proved to be very lucky – because ESTER is not the only word with two Es…

VENUE is another, and that's today's answer – meaning I got two yellow Es on the first guess and was well on the way to a decent score. Only decent rather than great, admittedly, because I ended up with a four. But that's fine given that the average here is 4.1, reflecting not just those two Es but also the presence of an uncommon V.

ESTER left 33 options for me, and I cut that to 11 with PIECE. This was every bit as unlucky as my first guess had been lucky; WordleBot suggested that it would have expected it to leave five answers, and I had more than twice that many.

Still, I did have a green E now, and in fact there was only one place where the other one could go; I was looking at -E--E.

I found nine of those 11, as it happens: LEAVE, HEAVE, WEAVE, LEDGE, HEDGE, WEDGE, BELLE, VENUE and DELVE; the two I missed were FEMME and GEODE.

Among the words on my shortlist, DELVE seemed like a good bet; it wouldn't guarantee me a four, but nor would any other word I could think of. And I needn't have worried anyway, because when the V turned yellow it left VENUE as the only option.

Yesterday's Wordle hints (game #1598)

In a different time zone where it's still Monday? Don't worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1598, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in three places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday's Wordle answer was A.

A is a reasonably common starting letter in Wordle: 140 games begin with this letter. It ranks 6th among starting letters, behind S, C, B, T and P.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday's Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday's Wordle was E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That's one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1598) was… AWOKE.

I was initially a little baffled as to why the average score for this game is as high as 4.1, because on the face of it is doesn't appear to be too difficult. However, on reflection I think my own experience today is skewing my view of this, because after all AWOKE does contain two relatively uncommon letters in W and K.

Neither are uncommon in the way that Z, X, Q and J are – but compared to the likes of R, T, L and N, they're positively rare. Here's a quick reminder:

So, between them K and W appear 404 times – which is fewer than the likes of Y or C do on their own, or less than half of R.

Neither features in any of the most popular start words, either, which may also have played a part in that relatively high average. But for once, my randomly chosen start word really came up trumps here.

On most days, WEIGH would be a decent first guess rather than a good one, but here it performed very well indeed by giving me that W right away, and with an E too. Sure, it still left 52 options – but on Sunday I had more than 1,100 to deal with, so in that context it was a huge success.

I figured that the W would probably go second, after an S or T, and came up with SWEAR, SWEDE, SWEET, SWEEP, SWEPT, SWORE and TWEET for that format. But then I remembered that an ER word was also a possibility, so looked again and added the likes of TOWER, ROWER, LOWER, COWER, POWER and MOWER.

That ER format scared me, so I played TOWER and crossed my fingers that it wouldn't be one from that list; nobody wants a letter trap on a Monday. But when the R turned gray and the W and E stayed yellow, that option was ruled out – along with all of the other words on my shortlist.

The only three options that were left were AWOKE, ELBOW and ENDOW, but I'll admit that I never thought of the last of those. I did find the other two, though, and got lucky when I plumped for AWOKE and scored a three.

What is Wordle?

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm in 2022 and is still going strong in 2025.

We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4a. Answers are never plural.

4b. …unless they are. There have been a couple of plural words that don't end in an S or ES, including FUNGI (game #439), ATRIA (#1478) and TEETH (#1551). But S and ES plurals are definitely outlawed.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10a. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions…

10b. …unless they are not. That's because the NYT has added in some of its own words which weren't in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4a above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
