A New York Police Department sergeant has died after a shootout with a suspect in the Bronx on Friday, and a second sergeant was also injured, officials said.
The suspect was also shot, according to a tweet from NYPD assistant commissioner for public information J. Peter Donald, who said that officials would brief the media soon at Jacobi Hospital, where police officials and Mayor Bill de Blasio have gathered.
The department's top spokesman, Stephen Davis, previously told The Associated Press that the shooting involved a man suspected of committing a home invasion who had been pulled over by police.
The sergeant's death was confirmed on Twitter by New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, who said she was "horrified" by the news. "Terrible day for the city," she said.
The shooting comes two days after two Iowa police officers were ambushed and killed on the outskirts of Des Moines.
