NYPD rookie suspended after he sets down gun and friend accidentally shoots himself with it

NEW YORK _ A Bronx rookie cop was suspended after he put his gun down to play a video game and a 21-year-old friend accidentally shot himself dead with the officer's gun, police sources said Monday.

Police Officer Martinson Afariyeboah, who joined the New York Police Department last April 27, faces almost certain termination in the fatal accident, sources said.

The shooting happened about 5:30 a.m. Sunday inside his friend's apartment on West Moshulu Parkway South.

Afariyeboah, who lives on the same floor and was off duty, went to Frederick Afoakwah's place to play video games.

The sources said he put his gun down on the table, and while playing a game Afoakwah picked it up to check it out and inadvertently fired a single shot into his neck. He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he died, they said.

The cop had been assigned to a Bronx housing command, Police Service Area 7.
