NYPD officer shot at desk a day after colleague hurt in 'assassination attempt'

A NYPD officer was shot at his desk just a day after his colleague was blasted in what police are describing as two 'assassination attempts'.

A policeman was shot in the neck and chin when his patrol van was ambushed in the Bronx, New York, on Saturday, although he survived the shooting and left hospital in a wheelchair today.

Another officer suffered a bullet wound to the arm this morning when the same shooter entered a Bronx police station and opened fire on policemen and civilian workers.

The suspect, who reportedly has a lengthy criminal record, dived to the ground after running out of bullets in the 41st precinct headquarters.

A video of this morning's attack shows people inside the building fleeing in terror as the gunman chases after them.

He is then seen walking back the way he came, before dropping to the ground.

The shooter was filmed firing at a police van in another clip, leaving one officer injured.

After the attack, Chief Terence Monahan, commanding officer of the 41st precinct, tweeted: "Tonight in the Bronx, a violent criminal opened fire on 2 of our hero cops in an attempt to assassinate them as they sat in a police van.

"One officer was shot in the neck, but will thankfully survive. Make no mistake — we will apprehend the person responsible."

According to CNN, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said: "This is not a crime gone bad. This is not a liquor store robbery interrupted, that a tragedy erupts from.

"This is a premeditated assassination attempt. By the grace of God we're not planning a funeral."

The suspect was arrested after diving to the ground in the police station, with officers seizing a 9mm Sig Sauer pistol from him.

He has a previous conviction for attempted murder from 2002 and was paroled in 2017.

The gunman apparently spoke to officers in the police van before opening fire on them on Saturday.

One of the policemen apparently shouted 'gun' when the shooter pulled out his firearm.
