NYKS volunteers to join sports minister Anurag Thakur during ‘Clean India’ campaign launch on Oct 1

NEW DELHI: Hundreds of thousands of volunteers involved with the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) under the aegis of the ministry of youth affairs and sports (MYAS) will join sports minister Anurag Thakur during the launch of the nationwide month-long ‘Clean India’ campaign from Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj on October 1.

The programme is being organised in six lakh villages of 744 districts across the country through the networks of NYKS-affiliated Youth Clubs & National Service Scheme (NSS)-affiliated institutions, informed youth affairs secretary Usha Sharma during a press briefing here. The Clean India campaign will run from October 1 to 31.

The secretary stated that the aim of the cleanliness drive is to create awareness, mobilise people and ensure their involvement in cleaning waste, mainly single-use plastic waste throughout the country. “Through this mega initiative, 75 lakh kg waste, mainly plastic, will be collected and disposed of with the support and voluntary participation of citizens,” she informed.

Although, the focus point of initiative is village, specific segments of population such as religious bodies, teachers, corporate bodies, TV and film actors, women’s groups and others are also participating in the programme on a particular designated day to show their solidarity for the cause and making it a public movement.

Careful planning has been done to collect the waste in collection bags and dispose of the same at locations identified with the help of district administration and municipal corporations, the secretary announced.
