Every year at comic con, you know you will see some of the same cosplays walking around. You will always have your Deadpools, there will be Princess Leias, but there is also a special level of cosplayers who are always represented: The lazy dudes.
The lazy dude cosplay was born back in 1998 when The Big Lebowski came out. A sweater, pajamas, and some sunglasses with a beard and longer hair is all you really need. For decades, that was the cosplay of choice for guys who wanted to dress up but didn’t want to be uncomfortable the entire time. I get it, it is a mood.
But then, the genre of cosplay evolved. When “Fat Thor” appeared in Avengers: Endgame, it gave the comfort cosplay guys new looks. Now, a third option has entered into the canon of lazy guy cosplays and it is all thanks to Leonardo DiCaprio. Bob Ferguson, DiCaprio’s alter ego in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, wears a robe, comfy pants, a beanie, and some sunglasses. It does mean that guys all over New York Comic-Con have taken to being Bob.
Before I ever made it to the Javits center this morning, I saw a Bob. One of my fellow journalists was at a press preview and rocked the robe. I walked into the convention center only to see another Bob. And I heard tale of others around New York Comic-Con which made me decide that Bob Ferguson is the new version of the Lazy Guy Cosplay.
And honestly, good. That’s a fun thing and we get to see new characters join the fold of the same cosplays we’ll see time and time again so why not get excited about that? The Dude, Fat Thor, and Bob Ferguson will now always be staples at comic con.
