New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has confirmed that Taylor Swift has paid an eye-watering fee for her extravagant wedding to Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce.
Just last week, record-breaking, Grammy-winning singer Swift officially tied the knot with Kelce in a lavish ceremony in New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
The celebrations featured a star-studded guest list, with comedian Adam Sandler officiating the power couple’s wedding.
And with such a large shindig, packed with some of the world’s biggest celebs, roads were shut down, and police presence in the city was ramped up.
On Friday (US time), NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed that the “Lover” singer has paid USD$160,000 (approx. AUD$230,116.50) for the city’s permit, which covered the police’s overtime to supervise her July 3 nuptials.
“Taylor Swift will be paying — has paid the cost of the permit that was lodged, which was over $160,000 for that event and for the response to that event. And that was a permit that was finalised in the days just before the event itself,” Mamdani said in a press conference, shared by C-SPAN.

Mamdani’s remarks come after the pair copped a fair amount of backlash for their wedding, which led to road closures and increased police presence within NYC, with many pointing out how these would cause issues for residents and small businesses who rely on foot traffic.
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce should have had a small private wedding. This is ridiculous. Imagine all the small businesses that are losing revenue due to the road closures. The businesses should sue them, period. pic.twitter.com/amnC2A8b2p

At the time, political commentator and streamer Hasan Piker also called out the power couple, claiming taxpayers were the ones who shelled out cash for security for their wedding.
“Controversial opinion, I think this is a dramatic misuse of public resources,” Piker said.
“Sorry, I f*cking — I’m saying it. I think it’s insane. I think it’s a bad look,” he continued.
“It’s heightening the contradictions. It’s showcasing one again that, no matter how beloved a public figure you might be, you’re still, if you’re a billionaire, you’re still a billionaire and you are going to do billionaire shit.”

But alongside the criticsms of their nuptials, the duo have also received praise after it was reported that Swift and Kelce donated USD$26 million (approx. AUD$37 million) to multiple charities — including children’s hospitals, food banks and education programs — ahead of their wedding, The Guardian reported.
The exact cost of Swift and Kelce’s wedding has not been confirmed. However, it’s speculated that the pair dropped USD$30 million (approx. AUD $43 million) on the whole shebang.
