NY Yankees' schedule keeps getting tougher as series opener vs. Braves rained out

The Yankees were already entering a challenging stretch of games heading into Tuesday, with their schedule undergoing constant changes and doubleheaders piling up.

Add another one to the list.

The Yankees' series-opener against the Atlanta Braves was postponed because of inclement weather in Atlanta, and it will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday.

The first game will begin at 4:10 p.m.

Gerrit Cole, who was slated to start Tuesday, will be on the mound for the first game. Masahiro Tanaka will start the second.

The Yankees will now play three doubleheaders in a stretch of five days, with twin bills against the Mets scheduled for Friday and Sunday.

A tough season keeps getting tougher.

"2020, baby," manager Aaron Boone said. "We've got to figure it out. It creates a challenge. Obviously seven-inning (doubleheader) games makes it a little more doable and not as daunting. No question we're heading into a tough stretch here. We've just got to make sure we keep our minds right so we can continue to put our best foot forward."

Tuesday's rain-out meant the Yankees had to go five days without a game after their weekend series against the Mets was postponed because of two positive coronavirus tests within the Mets' traveling party.

The Yankees are now faced with playing 22 games in the next 19 days.

But Boone said his team simply has to fight through it.

"The expectations around here for this group and these guys, and they're terrific at it, doesn't change," Boone said before the game. "No matter what circumstances we're put in or whatever adversity comes our way or injuries come our way, we expect to go out and perform and perform well. That's the expectation in that room and it'll continue to be even as we navigate through a tough stretch."
