NY State Senator Antonacci (R) resigns from state Senate to join state Supreme Court

New York State Senator Bob Antonacci (R) resigned on December 31, 2019, after representing Senate District 50 for 11 months. Antonacci resigned after winning a five-way race for a spot on the New York State Supreme Court in November 2019.

Antonacci’s first bid for political office was in 2014 when he ran unsuccessfully for New York Comptroller. He was elected to the New York State Senate in 2018 after defeating John Mannion (D), 51% to 41%.

Antonacci ran for a seat on the New York State Supreme Court in 2019 to succeed the late Administrative Judge James Tormey. Tormey passed away on June 22, 2019.

Antonacci’s resignation will likely trigger a special election to fill his senate seat until the next general election on November 3, 2020. Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has not yet announced a date for this special election.
