NY Giants site talks Deandre Baker OTA performance: ‘No one seems to get very open on him’

The Giants first week of OTAs concluded recently, and it was the first chance to see former Georgia cornerback Deandre Baker go up against some of the team’s veterans in practice.

New York gave up three picks to move back into the first round to select Baker, and based on week one OTA notes from the Giants official website, it sounds like that was a smart move from GM Dave Gettleman.

“No one seems to get very open on DeAndre Baker,” John Schmeelk of Giants.com wrote. “The young outside cornerbacks are showing promise and ability, and their development will continue in training camp as they figure out how much contact they can get away with beyond five yards.”

Baker will have plenty of competition at cornerback from some of the younger guys on the Giants roster. Sam Beal, a third round pick in the supplemental draft out of Western Michigan, is reportedly playing well. There’s also fellow Jim Thorpe Award finalist Julian Love, who was taken in the fourth round out of Notre Dame, competing with Baker.
