NXT UK: 5 things we learned as Trent Seven and Joe Coffey do battle

WWE's NXT UK stopped in Coventry one more time ahead of the WWE UK Championship bout at NXT TakeOver: New York.

Pete Dunne will put his long title reign to the test against Walter this Friday night, some 48 hours before WWE WrestleMania 35.

Elsewhere this week the NXT UK Tag Team Champions sent a message and the Women's Champion looked ahead to her next challenger.

Here, Scott McLeod takes a look at five key talking points from NXT UK for Mirror Sport.

Staying Lucky

Following on from Fabian Aichner and Marcel Barthel's comments last week about how Amir Jordan and Kenny Williams conduct themselves, they faced the babyface duo in tag team action and would not allow them to execute their usual fun-loving antics, punishing Jordan in their corner.

Williams started to pick up the pace, but his momentum would quickly be stopped. Jordan got taken out on the outside seemingly leaving Williams prone to the double team attack, but 'The Lucky Yin' managed to counter a suplex from Aichner into a roll up for the win.

Jinny Strikes

After weeks of back and forth barbs in promos, Jinny will challenge Toni Storm next week for the NXT UK Women's Championship.

This week, Toni was being interviewed backstage about the match when Jinny attacked her. She caught the champ with a hard right and tossed her into some equipment, before referees dragged her away from her long time rival.

The Dominant Scot

Two of the best women's wrestlers not only in Scotland but in the UK squared off as the recently debuted Kay Lee Ray took on Isla Dawn. This followed Ray making it clear last week that despite her, Dawn and now Piper Niven all being Scottish, that doesn't make them friends.

Early on, Dawn got to show off her athleticism. Ray utilised some unique submissions to manipulate the joints, before the end of the bout turned into a striking match, which Ray got the best of. She followed up with the Dirty Bomb for a win.

The Veterans make a statement

The NXT UK Tag Team champions the Grizzled Young Veterans cut a promo in front of the fans, with Zack Gibson making sure he could be heard over the loud boos and chants from the audience. No matter what they said he reminded their detractors, the Vets wouldn't let the crowd get to them.

Gibson said he was not cleared to compete after their first defence against Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch and talked about why they have a chip on their shoulder due to years of promoters backing what he referred to as "the wrong people", but they weren't going to be passed over anymore and ensured this by taking their moment in Blackpool.

He addressed the triumphant Williams and Jordan, calling them lucky and stating they hadn't been through what he and Drake had experiences, before declaring themselves the new guard and that the NXT UK Tag Titles will be the most important belts anywhere.

Still Joe Coffey's Kingdom

This week's main event saw Trent Seven take on the leader of Gallus, Scotland's Joe Coffey, with the Coventry crowd very vocal in favour of The Midlander.

The momentum swung several times early on, including Seven taking out Joe and hitting a DDT. After dropping Seven back first on the barricade, Coffey looked to slowly break him down and when Seven did begin to make a comeback, the damage to his back was still bothering him.

He almost couldn't make it back in the ring due to the injury, yet nearly emerged victorious after the Seven Stars Lariat. Inevitably, however, his back gave out and Joe picked up the win with the double leg Boston crab - a much-needed boost for the former number one contender to the WWE UK Championship.
