Nutritionist shares tips on avoiding a hangover and explains why it feels so awful

A banging headache, waves of nausea and the room spinning is the price many revellers pay for enjoying that extra 'one-for-the-road.'

Anyone enjoying an alcoholic beverage has suffered from the effects of a heavy session, with 168,000 people annually searching online for “hangover cure” in the UK alone.

Besides hangover cures, thousands also searched online for symptoms of alcohol poisoning and hair of the dog.

According to research from vitamins and supplement specialists, YourZooki, London is the UK's hangover hotspot, followed by Scotland and the North West.

YourZooki enlisted the help of nutritionist Amanda Callenberg, who has provided her top tips to curing a hangover.

She said: “Alcohol contains ethanol, which is a toxic chemical that needs to be broken down by the liver before it can be safely eliminated from the body.

"It is also a diuretic, which means it helps our body to get rid of fluids.

"When we become severely dehydrated our bodies can’t remove these toxins, so they stay circulating in our bodies. It is this dehydration that causes the classic hangover symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, dry mouth, nausea and vomiting.

"To prevent a hangover in the morning, drink plenty of water, before, during and the day after drinking to keep yourself well-hydrated.

"Aim to drink a glass of water between drinks and have at least one big glass of water before going to sleep.”
