NURVV Run insoles and trackers are a huge asset to runners looking to shed time and improve their running technique.
They deliver premium coaching and performance metrics directly to your iPhone and Apple Watch.
You get stats on the degree of pronation for each foot, cadence, footstrike analysis and training load recommendation.
The Footstrike Coach feature is super useful if you suffer from over-pronation or under-pronation.
Set-up
The insoles fit under the sole of your current shoe with the tracker conveniently attached to the outer rim of the shoe.
Take your shoes’ insoles out, slide in the NURVV Run insoles and then place your original insoles on top of them.
Ensure the clip of the NURVV insole is secured to the outside of your shoes.
The insoles are so thin and flexible that you won’t notice you are wearing them.
Clipping the trackers into place and taking them off is quite fiddly. They need to be securely attached obviously but removing them takes a bit of getting used to.
The same applies to taking the trackers off their proprietary charger.
Turning the trackers on and off is also tricky. The power button is on the inside of the tracker and the firm advises that you power them up before you attach them to your shoes.
Trying to power them on when attached can put pressure on the connectors and damage them.
How they work
The insoles relay the data they collect to the clip-on rechargeable trackers using 16 pressure sensors on each foot.
As well as delivering stats on your pace, distance and cadence, the sensors relay information on your foot-strike pattern, pronation and balance.
You need to pair the trackers and insoles with the NURVV smartphone app which is straightforward enough. They must be powered on to do this.
If you run with your phone, the app tracks everything while connected to the trackers.
The trackers last for about five hours and have built-in GPS, Bluetooth, and ANT radios.
The look bulky but they are lightweight and cause no discomfort when wearing.
The built-in GPS means you can use the trackers without your phone. (You download the data to the app after your run.)
App
There’s an app for both iOS and Android phones, but the only wearable supported is Apple Watch.
Key features include Pace Coach and Power Zone workouts along with training to improve your footstroke.
The company said that optimising your footstroke reduces running-related injuries and improves performance.
The Footstroke coach uses Focus Zones in which you practice using your target footstrike. The app then analyses performance and shows you the percentage of footstrikes within the Focus Zones that were on target.
The pronation data is also impressive and the app advises on how to reduce over-pronation or increase any under-pronation.
You can easily create and initiate performance test runs to, for example, run a distance faster or create an interval training session.
The app also gives you a running health score based on your training load, pronation, cadence and balance data gathered from the insoles.
One handy feature is auto-pause which means if you stop at a traffic lights, for example, the timer will pause until you resume running.
Durability
The company says the insoles will last for 2,400km of running, after which they can be replaced relatively inexpensively as you don’t need to buy replacement trackers.
Verdict
I would be classed as a novice runner and found NURVV Run to be a really neat piece of kit that made me feel more comfortable and clued-up on training.
I could see their merit for more experienced or more regular runners who might be training for a race.
