Nurses face forking out for damage to cars parked at University Hospital Wishaw while they worked

NHS heroes have hit out at mindless vandals who wrecked their cars while they were working at Wishaw hospital.

Several nurses have contacted the Wishaw Press over the past week saying their vehicles have been damaged and keyed while they are inside fighting on the frontline against coronavirus.

One hospital chief have said CCTV and security staff would monitor the situation.

However, that has been rubbished by one nurse.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said: “I have not had the time to get to the garage as I have been working and the garage I would normally use is closed due to COVID-19.

“It is cut right through as it’s white and wouldn’t buff out so it will probably need to be resprayed but either way I will be out of pocket.

“My colleague’s car is terrible and then the next day it happened to another one of my other colleagues.

“I’ve worked here for 10 years and you do get the odd dink in your door but never to this extreme or volume of people.

“Security cameras are never on the cars and only focus on the main entrance. Security are no help at all.

“I have never seen them patrol the carpark and everyone is left to foot the bill.”

Another nurse has already spoken to hospital management regarding the rise in incidents.

She said: “I just feel that it’s a trying enough time for everyone without finishing a long tiring shift to be faced with your car vandalised.

“I know the company that take care of the car park, have been asked for footage and apparently there is no film available. There’s not enough cameras either.

“It fills me with great sadness and frustration that over the last couple of days there have been a series of malicious attacks.

“It’s even more so given how tired and stressed staff are with the current situation and long shifts.”

NHS Lanarkshire director of hospital services at University Hospital Wishaw, Stephen Peebles, said the hospital would continue to monitor CCTV cameras.

He said: “We are extremely disappointed by the acts of vandalism we have encountered in our car park, particularly at a time where staff are working round the clock to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

“In line with other public sector car parks, notices are displayed advising motorists that vehicles are parked in hospital grounds at the owner’s risk and that NHS Lanarkshire cannot accept liability for the loss or damage to the vehicle or their contents.

“We continue to make best use of our digital CCTV cameras and security staff monitor the car park throughout the day.

“Digital images are made available to the police in the event of such incidents to aid detection of offenders. We would urge motorists to report these incidents to the police.

“We would also ask them to exercise normal precautions such as remaining vigilant and not to leave valuables on display in their vehicles.”
