NURSES and midwives will gather at several Hunter health sites on Tuesday to voice their opposition to the NSW government's public sector wage freeze.
More than 60 NSW Nurses and Midwives' Association (NSWNMA) branches are taking part in actions statewide, "appalled" by the government's wage freeze and "attempt to silence them" with a $1000 payment.
Hunter nurses and midwives plan to gather in their own time at John Hunter Hospital, Waratah Mental Health Centre, and Maitland and Muswellbrook Hospitals.
Charlestown MP Jodie Harrison said the proposed wage freeze was "economic madness". She met with nurses from the Lake Macquarie Mental Health Service on Monday.
"Our nurses have been on the frontline during COVID-19 - they deserve a medal, not a pay cut," she said. "The best thing we can do economically right now is get people back to work, and the best way to do that is to get people spending. Cutting real wages is cutting people's ability to spend."
