Nursery school inferno 'may have been started deliberately'

A fierce blaze which engulfed a Garston nursery school could have been started deliberately.

Firefighters were called out to the premises of the Honey Pot day nursery in Earp Street shortly after 7.45pm.

Initially two fire engines  were sent out to the blaze, but this was escalated to three engines and an aerial platform ladder when the extent of the fire became clear.

The fire sent large plumes of smoke billowing across the area and lit up the evening sky.

The blaze was eventually brought under control by 10pm.

A Merseyside police spokesperson said: "We are appealing for information following a fire at a nursery in Garston on Saturday night (4 May 2019).

"Emergency services were called to the Honey Pot Day Nursery on Earp Street to a report the building was on fire.

"The fire was extinguished by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.

"Enquiries into the fire are at a very early stage, but it was reported it may have been started deliberately.

"The building was unoccupied at the time and there are no reports of any injuries.

"CCTV and witness enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances."
