Nursery registration suspended over 'suitability of senior staff'

Parents of children at a south Liverpool nursery have been desperately seeking alternative childcare after its registration was suspended for six weeks over unknown "concerns".

Mossley Hill Childcare, on Mossley Hill Drive, Sefton Park, will remain shut until education regulator Ofsted is satisfied it can keep children safe.

The agency says it has received concerns about the "suitability of senior staff" and needs to "make sure that children are safe".

Parents were told on Wednesday the nursery would be shut with immediate effect.

The nature of the concerns and who raised them with Ofsted have not been revealed.

When the ECHO called the nursery to ask, a manager declined to say what had happened and referred to the issue as a "small concern".

However, since publication the nursery has since provided a statement which reads: "As you are aware we have been instructed by Ofsted to suspend provision at Mossley Hill Childcare with immediate effect, due to a reporting procedural error.

"Having served our local community for the past 20 years our long standing and dedicated staff are totally committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all the children in our care.

"The protection, welfare and happiness of our children is at the heart of everything we do. We are currently in dialogue with Ofsted and are working with them to ensure that our setting is fully compliant and can re-open at the earliest opportunity.

"We would like to thank parents for their continued support and confidence in us and look forward to welcoming the children back as soon as possible."

The nursery has not undergone a full Ofsted inspection since November 2018, when it was rated Good in all areas.

In that report, inspectors concluded: "Staff are supported well by the manager and other senior members of the team.

"Effective supervision arrangements ensure that teaching is consistently strong throughout the nursery."

When the ECHO asked Ofsted what had happened this week, a spokeswoman said: "We have suspended the nursery’s registration due to concerns about the suitability of senior staff, and the nursery’s ability to meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

"We are looking into these concerns to make sure that children are safe."
