Nurse who lost both legs and arm after suffering from cough found hanged

A nurse who lost both her legs and arm after suffering from a cough was found hanged at her home.

Jayne Carpenter was left with just one limb when she developed sepsis four years ago.

The 53-year-old bravely vowed to battle on but said she was 'not having quality of life but enduring it.'

Her husband Rob, 56, then got a call on December 7 from Jayne asking him to pick up their dog, reports The Mirror.

But when he arrived at 4.30pm the house in Wales he discovered his wife hanged on the stairs.

A cause of death is currently pending further investigations.

After her death, heartbroken Rob paid tribute online and said: "The brightest star in my sky has burnt out."

Dedicated Jayne was desperate to lead an active life and said her independence had been "stripped from me overnight."

Her family had been fund raising to get pioneering limb surgery not available on the NHS and raised over £20,000 of her £265,000 target.

She had been admitted to intensive care in May 2016 when her cough developed into deadly sepsis - which kills more than 30,000 people in the UK every year.

Jayne spent nine weeks in a coma and her husband was told she would need multiple amputations to survive.

The couple hoped she would be able to have osseointegration surgery - where artificial limbs are attached to a patient's bone.

But there were fears she may not have enough bone left for the operation to be successful.

Friends and family have now paid tribute to the "kind and beautiful lady."

In September last year Jayne spoke out on World Sepsis Day, hoping to raise awareness of the condition.

She said her life was turned upside down and she had told Rob that he could leave her if he wished to.

Jayne said the last three years of recovery have brought huge challenges to her and coming to terms with the limits she faces has been difficult.

She said at the time: "We try to live life as normally as possible but life is not always the same as before.

"I divide my life into two parts; before and after I got sepsis.

"I lost half my life."

Assistant coroner Rachel Knight adjourned the inquest in Pontypridd until February 2022.
