Nurse who DRAGGED dementia patient by her ankles along hospital corridor is struck off

A nurse who was convicted of assaulting a dementia patient in his care has been struck off.

Steven Campbell dragged 88-year-old Jessie Colquhoun by her ankles along a corridor at Glasgow ’s Gartnavel Hospital in October 2017.

Jessie, who was 5ft 2in, suffered crippling back pain as a result of osteoarthritis and a heart condition.

She died seven months after the assault.

Campbell was suspended for 18 months and, after Jessie's family read about the harrowing incident in the Daily Record, he was charged.

The family were initially told there had been an incident but the hospital could not give any details because there was an inquiry.

We reported in November 2017 that two nurses at Gartnavel had been suspended over claims a female patient had been dragged along a corridor by her ankles.

After her family read our story, the hospital confirmed to them that it was about Jessie. Her granddaughter Sharon Hennigan then went to the police.

In January this year, Campbell appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court where he was ordered to do 200 hours community service for the assault, and to wear a tag preventing him leaving home between 7pm and 7am for three months.

At a hearing this week the Nursing and Midwifery council concluded that Campbell should no longer be allowed to practice as a nurse.

The panel concluded that Campbell "had not provided any explanation or evidence of remorse for his actions” and was “liable to place patients at unwarranted risk of harm in the future”.
