Nurse slams 'idiots' for mass snowball fight close to overrun Leeds hospital

A nurse has slammed “idiots” who took part in huge Leeds snowball fight despite lockdown rules being in place.

Yesterday hundreds of students and resident took to Hyde Park for a snowball fight that was organised on Facebook.

Despite the event receiving huge backlash over its breaching of coronavirus guidelines and its proximity to Leeds General Infirmary, a student who attended the event said it “was a laugh everyone needed”.

But not everyone agreed and called the event “horrific”.

A nurse from Harrogate said the “virus won’t go away” if people continue to break the rules.

She said: “I work for the NHS… it is horrific. People seriously have no idea what it's like...this virus won't go away when people are continuing to break the rules. One word...Idiots”

Leeds coronavirus infection rate is 331.1 per 100,000 people and in the last seven days, 2,626 new Covid-19 cases have been diagnosed in the city.

A Leeds City Council spokesperson has said: “Following the announcement of another national lockdown, along with the recent rise in rates in Leeds it is vitally important that we strictly follow the guidance in place if we are to reduce transmission. This includes staying at home as much as possible and only leaving the house when absolutely necessary. We must continue to observe social distancing, as well as regularly washing hands and wearing face coverings. The recent mutation of the virus makes it much easier for it to spread and so we must now be extra vigilant to avoid our hospitals becoming overwhelmed.

“We must continue to work extremely hard to protect our health service and keep ourselves and each other safe.”

We asked West Yorkshire Police whether anyone had been fined in connection with the snowball fights and they said: "We are aware of this matter. All persons dispersed."
