Nurse set to work at Nightingale North West devastated after bike stolen from outside children's hospital

A nurse set to start work at the Nightingale North West next week is devastated after his bike was stolen outside Manchester Children's Hospital.

Daniel Murray, a clinical support worker at the children's hospital, had just finished a long shift when he noticed his bike was missing.

It was discovered somebody had broken into the caged area where Daniel had locked up his bicycle and taken it.

The incident was reported to police and hospital security staff on April 1.

Daniel, 44, relied on the bike to travel to work from his home in Levenshulme and said he took it everywhere with him.

He is also set to start working at the new Nightingale North West Hospital helping to treat patients suffering from Covid-19, and will have further to travel.

At the moment Daniel is travelling to work on an old bike, but it is heavy and worn down making the journey more exhausting.

Daniel said it is likely the thief knew the owner of the bike worked for the NHS as it was in a designated staff area.

He said: "I was working all day. I stored it in the car park at the back. I locked it up in a metal cage.

"When I came back after a long day at work it was gone.

"You can see from the outside it is in a staff car park.

"I cycle everywhere I go, I rely on it.

"I have got an older bike I have been using, it is an older worn down bike. It isn't ideal."

Daniel added: "I am not working on a coronavirus ward at the moment I am in the children's hospital, but I have volunteered to go to the Nightingale ward.

"I am starting next week. I will have another two or three miles to get into town.

"I go everywhere on it. I go into town to see my friend, I take it with me everywhere.

"I have spoken to security guards and police but not heard anything back."

The bicycle is a Hybrid Pro in jet black, with 'Specialized' in white writing down the side.

It had distinctive red striped markings on one side, while the other side has blue stripes.

The bike is worth around £1,400.

Daniel is appealing for anyone who has seen the bike or any information over its whereabouts to contact police or the hospital security team.

Anyone with further information can contact Greater Manchester Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
