Nurse's wish after 'long Covid' turns out to be stage four lung cancer

A nurse is eager to make memories with her family after being diagnosed with stage four lunch cancer that doctors initially thought was long Covid. Victoria Puar now hopes to go to Disneyland with children Joseph and Lydia and husband Ben.

Victoria has been a nurse at Birmingham Children's Hospital for more than 20 years, working tirelessly through the pandemic like so many others in the NHS. It was during this time that Victoria caught Covid and was left with a lingering cough.

A colleague has claimed that it was thought to be long Covid, but it turned out to be advanced cancer, reports BirminghamLive. Tests have revealed that the nurse has stage for lung cancer, which has now spread to her pericardium.

Sadly, treatment options are limited. Victoria's friend and colleague, Lisa O'brien, has set up a fundraising page in hope of granting the family's wish of a magical trip to Disneyland Florida. More than £13,000 has been raised so far.

Lisa told BirminghamLive: "Victoria is an amazing nurse, doting mother and a lovely friend. She is warm, caring, hardworking.

"She is always willing to help and has been amazing support to me. The Cardiology department, our ward, is very close-knit. That's why we want to help Victoria in any way we can.

"I know that Victoria's message, and hope from this, is to encourage people to be regularly checked for diseases like cancer. All she had was an irritating cough, which doctors assumed to be long-Covid. There was no reason to think it was something else."

On the fundraiser, Lisa added: "It has snowballed quickly. Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to read, share and donate to it so far. I'm sure Victoria will be able to create some beautiful, everlasting memories with her husband and children which they can treasure forever."
