Nurse Lucy Letby pleads not guilty to murder of eight babies

A nurse accused of murdering eight babies and attempting to kill 10 more has entered not guilty pleas to all charges.

Lucy Letby, 31, is alleged to have embarked on a year long killing spree at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016.

She appeared at Manchester Crown Court today via video-link from HMP Peterborough, where she is being held on remand, for a pre-trial hearing.

Letby was asked to enter pleas for the first time and repeated "not guilty" 18 times as the charges were put to her.

Letby is alleged to have murdered five boys and three girls while working at the neonatal unit of the hospital, as well as attempting to murder five boys and five girls.

All the victims were under one year of age.

After entering her pleas, Letby, whose address was given as Arran Avenue, Hereford, sat listening to hearing, which dealt largely with administrative matters.

The then nurse was charged with the offences following a major investigation by Cheshire Polic e in 2017.

Reporting restrictions are still in place ahead of the trial, which is now scheduled for October 2022.
