Nurse Leilani Medel from Bridgend died from Covid-19 possibly contracted at work, inquest told

A nurse from Bridgend died after testing positive for Covid-19 which she may have contracted while working, an inquest opening has heard.

Leilani Medel, 41, died on March 31 after being admitted to the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend with a fever and respiratory problems.

An inquest opening at Pontypridd Coroners' Court on Thursday heard that Ms Medel was diagnosed with Covid-19 after being admitted to the hospital's accident and emergency department on the day she died.

The court heard that Ms Medel required a large amount of respiratory support but her condition continued to deteriorate and she died.

The body of Ms Medel, of Coychurch, underwent a post-mortem examination and a provisional cause of death was given as Covid-19.

Coroner Rachel Knight expressed her condolences to Ms Medel's family and adjourned Ms Medel's inquest to June 15, 2021.
