Nuri Sahin has outlined the key differences between Borussia Dortmund’s slump in Jurgen Klopp’s final season and Liverpool’s current situation.
A 1-0 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night eased the Reds struggles as they moved up from eighth to sixth in the table – leapfrogging both Everton and Tottenham Hotspur.
However, after going 68 Premier League games without defeat at Anfield, a club record six consecutive losses on home turf has left the reigning champions 25 points adrift of leaders Manchester City and five points off a top four spot to secure Champions League qualification.
During Liverpool’s dramatic slump, comparisons have been made to the struggles Klopp endured in the 2014/15 campaign, which proved to be his last at Dortmund.
His side, who had been runners-up in the Bundesliga the previous year, were in the relegation zone at the halfway point before a late rally eventually saw them finish in seventh place.
Sahin, 32, who now turns out for Turkish side Antalyaspor, has previously played for both Dortmund and Liverpool and explains that the two scenarios are far from the same.
Inside Futbol quote him as telling German broadcaster Sport1: “At that time we did not have as many injuries at BVB as Liverpool currently do.
“Sure, we had a few injured, I was among them. But it’s extreme with the Reds at the moment.”
