Nuno Espirito Santo has some decisions to make when it comes to how his Tottenham side line up in the new Premier League season.
The former Wolves boss was appointed as the new Tottenham head coach last week, ending a wait of more than two months for Spurs fans for a permanent successor to Jose Mourinho.
Espirito Santo is now getting to work with his players ahead of the new season and has a number of issues to resolve following a disappointing season for Spurs, in which they failed to finish in the top four again, finishing seventh in the Premier League and qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League instead.
Among those issues is addressing Tottenham's defensive woes, with that being key to whether or not there is a big improvement in the capital.
Spurs have been linked with a number of defenders this summer, with Bologna's Takehiro Tomiyasu and Frenchman Jules Kounde among them, amid questions over how Espirito Santo will line Tottenham up next season in defence.
He has previously preferred a three-man defence during his time at Wolves, although he has played a back four at Porto and Valencia in the past.
But former England defender Danny Mills reckons the Portuguese head coach will go with the system that suited him so well at Wolves, starting with Spurs' Premier League opener against champions Manchester City next month.
“I think they will go with a back three, that’s what he prefers," he told Football Insider.
“He’s got one wing-back in Matt Doherty and at left wing-back there’s [Sergio] Reguilon. I think he’s a really good player and good going forward.
“That lends itself to that and it’s what he knows and what he’s played before. I think there’s a really good chance that they will go with three at the back and those two will thrive.”
Spurs fans will certainly hope that is the case, with Reguilon showing flashes of his ability last season and Doherty enduring a disappointing campaign after his move from Wolves, where he had previously thrived working with Espirito Santo.
