Nuno Espirito Santo response when asked about replacing Unai Emery at Arsenal

Nuno Espirito Santo has refused to comment on speculation linking him with the Arsenal job out of respect for Unai Emery .

The Wolves boss has emerged as a leading candidate for the role at the Emirates after impressing with the midlands club.

Emery is under increasing pressure after the Gunners' latest defeat at home to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League leaves them still needing a result in their last game to qualify.

Santo's side meanwhile have already booked their place in the next round, and sit three places ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League.

Asked whether there were any truth to the rumours linking him with the Arsenal post, Santo replied: “I think you know me well enough and you know that I’m not going to answer about that.

“I will never mention an issue that’s not a reality. Mainly because the job has a manager in it. It would be disrespectful.”

Santo is now 4/5 favourite with bookmakers to replace Emery, as the Spaniard was cut to odds of just 1/2 to be sacked before Arsenal's next match with Norwich.

Emery watched his side throw away the lead at the Emirates to lose 2-1 to Frankfurt in their penultimate Europa League qualifier.

The defeat was Arsenal's seventh match without a win, and it means they must go to Standard Liege in their final group fixture and get a result in order to progress.

Despite some home fans displaying 'Emery Out' banners, the Gunners boss put on a brave face post-match.

“Yes I can understand now all the criticism about the team, about me," Emery said. "We are not in a good moment and also as a coach I had that moment also in my career.

“Now our moment is not good. We need to win and to gain confidence. I think we are better than we are showing - the players, the coaches and me.

"Now we lost some confidence and we need to win. But really the response from the players in the first-half was good.

“But in this competition we continue to be in first place and we have a very good opportunity to win this group. We continue in this position and think of how we can achieve three points against Standard Liege.”
