Nuno Espirito Santo repeats Mauricio Pochettino claim with message to Tottenham fans

Tottenham Hotspur's long search for a new head coach is officially over after the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo on Wednesday evening.

Following Jose Mourinho's dismissal from the club midway through April, the Lilywhites had been linked with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Julian Nagelsmann and Brendan Rodgers over the past ten weeks.

Unable to lure one of the aforementioned quartet, as well as plenty of other candidates, to the club, Spurs instead turned to Espirito Santo following his Wolves exit.

Previously looking on course to take over at either Everton or Crystal Palace, the Portuguese has instead headed to north London and has penned a two-year contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

A number of supporters feel rather underwhelmed about the appointment given the links with other managers, yet the 47-year-old's first interview with Spurs TV has certainly got plenty on his side as they look ahead to the new term.

“Having a squad like Tottenham’s, you can only have one DNA, you can only think one way," he stated. "We have to enjoy the game, we have to play the game.

"When you have a squad of quality, talented players like we have, the DNA is to make the fans proud, make them enjoy watching.

"This is our DNA, to make our fans proud of us. There is no question about it that that will happen.

"We’re going to make them proud and they’re going to enjoy the team, for sure."

Beaming in his official club photos as he posed with the new Spurs home shirt, the new head coach certainly looked proud following his appointment.

'Proud' was a word he used a lot during his first interview as Tottenham boss, including in a short message to the club's supporters on Tottenham's social media channels.

"It's an honour for me to address you, Spurs fans. I am so happy to be here," he said.

"My promise to you: we're going to make you proud. We're going to make you proud."

Having listened to Espirito Santo's message, a number of Tottenham fans picked up on the similarity between the new head coach's words and those Pochettino used following his appointment all the way back in May 2014.

Speaking a few weeks after taking on the top job, the Argentine said: "We will try to build everything to make you proud of this football club."

Getting off to a slow start that almost culminated in an early dismissal until Harry Kane's late free-kick at Aston Villa saved his job, the 49-year-old worked wonders during his five-and-a-half years in N17.

Going close in the Premier League title race in both 2016 and 2017, Pochettino did also lead the team to the Champions League final in 2019 but trophies unfortunately alluded him prior to his exit.

A wonderful time for all Spurs fans during his tenure, all will have their fingers crossed that Espirito Santo can bring the good times back to north London after two frustrating years and make all fans very proud in the process.
