Nuno Espirito Santo handed another Tottenham injury blow from international break

Tottenham right-back Matt Doherty came off at half-time for the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday after picking up a knock in the first-half.

The 29-year-old joined Spurs from Wolves in 2020, but has struggled to hold down a place in the starting line-up under both Jose Mourinho and former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Whilst his club form may have the Tottenham fans wanting a little bit more, Doherty's form for the Republic of Ireland has been impressive.

Against Azerbaijan, the first of two international games in October, he played in a more advanced wing-back role and impressed both defensively and offensively.

It was a role that he is familiar with, making his trade there under Nuno at Molineux before his move to London. It was a similar tale when Ireland faced World Cup 2022 hosts Qatar and ran away with a resounding 4-0 victory.

Doherty again took plaudits from how involved he was in the attack in the wing-back role, but had to be replaced at half-time by Cyrus Christie as he went down with a knock.

It will come as a shame to the full-back if he is out for a long spell on the sidelines. Doherty has struggled to get into the side with summer arrival Emerson Royal holding down the right-back shirt and Japhet Tanganga also playing there at times.

However, his form for Ireland should hold hope for Spurs fans that he can return to the player that they signed just over a year ago from Wolves.
