Number of Scots patients who died after catching virus in hospital still unknown

The number of hospital patients who died after catching coronavirus while being treated for other conditions is not yet known, Health Secretary Jeane Freeman has admitted.

Figures published last week revealed more than 1,000 patients tested positive for Covid-19 after being admitted to hospital, but Freeman said the number of deaths linked to the cases is unknown.

The data, published by Public Health Scotland, shows there were 1,036 coronavirus cases described as being "definite hospital onset" - when a patient tested positive 15 days or more after being admitted to hospital.

A further 265 cases were classed as being "probably hospital onset" - with a positive test for the virus coming eight to 14 days after someone was admitted.

The figures cover the pandemic up until June 7.

Asked about the number of people who have died after potentially catching the virus while in hospital, Freeman said: "I can't give you that information at the moment because NSS (NHS National Services Scotland) is still working through that, to identify the numbers of probable and definite nosocomial cases that ultimately ended in the individuals' death.

"Once we have that information, then we will publish that, too."

Freeman added measures such as staff wearing masks, "enhanced cleaning regimes" and testing of staff have been introduced "to ensure that we work as hard as we can to prevent, and minimise nosocomial outbreaks of the virus wherever possible".

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, speaking at the daily coronavirus briefing, said Scotland is the only part of the UK to have published the data on the link between hospital admissions and subsequent positive coronavirus cases.

She added: "When we have that further analysis to link here these figures with those on people who have died, then that will be published in due course, too."
