Number of positive coronavirus cases in Nottinghamshire reaches 500

More than 500 people have now tested positive for coronavirus across Nottinghamshire, new Public Health England data has confirmed.

Figures released up to 5pm on Wednesday, April 8, showed that 509 people have now tested positive for Covid-19 across the county, an increase of 40 from Tuesday's figure of 469.

There has also been a sharp rise in the city, with 232 positive cases confirmed in Nottingham. This is an increase of 28 from Tuesday's figure of 204.

It comes as Nottingham University Hospitals confirmed a further 15 deaths at its two sites in the city, taking the total number of deaths to 68.

The trust has confirmed that all patients were aged between 45 and 90 years old, and died between Saturday, April 4, to Tuesday, April 7.

Dr Keith Girling, Medical Director at Nottingham University Hospitals, said: “Sadly we can confirm that a further 15 patients have died having tested positive for Covid-19.

"Regrettably that means that 68 Covid-19 positive patients we were caring for have sadly died since the beginning of March.

"The patients were aged 45 and 90, and died between April 4 and April 7.

“The families have been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this difficult and distressing time."

There has also been 45 recorded deaths at sites run by Sherwood Forest Hospitals, which includes King's Mill, Newark and Mansfield Community Hospitals.

It comes as the UK registered its highest single-day rise in deaths on Wednesday, with 936 people dying in the 24-hour period to 5pm on April 7 - including 828 in England.

It takes the total number of deaths in the UK to 7,172, with England recording the most total deaths at 6,483 followed by Scotland (366), Wales (245) and Northern Ireland (78).

Of the 828 new deaths in England, the youngest victim was just 22, the oldest was 103, and 46 of the patients had no known underlying health conditions.
