Number of people with Covid in Wales drops as coronavirus-related deaths also fall

The estimated number of people with coronavirus in Wales has dropped in the latest recorded week. The country's figure for deaths involving Covid-19 is also down.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reports that there was a total of 667 deaths in Wales during the week to November 18, and that 21 of those (3.1%) involved Covid. The Covid death toll was 40 the previous week.

The ONS has also released its latest infection survey, which is based on a random sample, for the week to November 22. The estimated number of people testing positive for Covid in Wales during the week was 39,600, which would equate to 1.3% of the population — or one in 75 people. This would mean a reduction from 1.49% the previous week.

The data shows a gradual decrease in cases since early October, when just under 4% of the Welsh population was estimated to have Covid. And the drop is thought to be reflected across age groups. An ONS spokesperson said: "In Wales, the percentage of people testing positive for Covid-19 decreased across all ages over recent weeks."

The recent trend is less encouraging for England, which saw an estimated 873,200 people test positive for Covid in the latest recorded week, which would equate to 1.6% of the population — an increase from 1.48% the previous week.

There were 10,880 deaths from all causes in England during the latest recorded week, and 401 of those involved Covid — 3.7% of the total. This compares to 3.1% in Wales.

Sarah Crofts, deputy director for the infection survey analysis, said: "After a recent period of decline, we are once again seeing infections begin to rise in England. Though Wales has seen continued decreases in positive cases, the trend is uncertain for the rest of the UK."
