Number of people with coronavirus who have died around the world passes 100,000

The number of people with coronavirus who have died around the world has now passed 100,000.

The Johns Hopkins University has been tracking the number of deaths and cases across the world during the outbreak.

On Friday, April 10 the American university said the current death toll is 100,376.

The milestone comes 101 days after authorities in China first alerted the World Health Organisation of the new coronavirus.

As of Friday, April 10, Italy is the worst affected country with almost 19,000 deaths so far.

The US is the second worst-hit country with almost 18,000 deaths. Spain comes in third with almost 16,000.

It comes as a total of 8,958 patients have died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Thursday. UK Health Minister Matt Hancock said this was record daily increase of 980.

A further 29 deaths have been reported in those who tested positive for Covid-19 in Wales, taking the total number of deaths in the country to 315.

An additional 502 new cases have also been confirmed, raising the total to 4,591.

The figures were released after the First Minister provided an early look at how lockdown measures could end in Wales.
