Number of people who have tested positive for coronavirus in UK rises by 171

The number of people in the UK who have tested positive for coronavirus has increased by 171.

The total figure for those who have been diagnosed with the virus since the outbreak is at 1,543, compared to 1,372 on Sunday, health officials said.

On its website, the Department of Health and Social Care initially said the death toll from the virus remained at 35.

But it later said on Twitter that it would publish updated figures this afternoon.

Wales earlier confirmed its first death from the virus. It is unclear whether this figure is counted among the 35 deaths.

“We can confirm that this is the first death in Wales from novel coronavirus (Covid-19) infection," Dr Giri Shankar, incident director for the coronavirus outbreak response at Public Health Wales, said.

“The individual, who was in their sixties and had underlying health conditions, sadly passed away at Wrexham Maelor Hospital."

No further details of the person's identity were revealed.

It came as the nation also confirmed 30 more people there had been infected.

The 1,543 figure is not a total of those who are infected at present but is a tally of all those who have been confirmed since the start of the outbreak.

This does not account for numbers of those who have recovered.

At the weekend, Health Secretary Matt Hancock suggested more than 10,000 people had been infected.

At least 407 confirmed cases have been in London.
