Number of people who have died in England after contracting coronavirus rises by 159 bringing UK death toll to 1,408

More than 150 coronavirus patients died overnight in England, raising the UK-wide death toll to 1,408.

NHS England confirmed 159 people had passed away since Sunday, aged between 32 and 98.

All but four – aged between 56 and 87 – had underlying health conditions.

It comes as the latest figures show 22,141 people have now tested postitive for Covid-19 – up by 2,619 from 9am yesterday.

The latest number of confirmed cases across the country was released by the Department of Health just before 5pm on Monday.

The government update also revealed that a total of 134,946 people have now been tested for the disease.

It comes as NHS chief Sir Simon Stevens revealed that more than 9,000 coronavirus patients are being treated in hospitals across England.

Speaking to the BBC on a visit to the new NHS Nightingale Hospital in London, Sir Simon said that the number of patients would inevitably increase.

However, services to accommodate additional capacity will be available later this week, he added.

Sir Simon said: “Today there are over 9,000 positive coronavirus patients in hospitals across England and we know that number is only going to increase.

“That’s why what you see here is a mass mobilisation, taking place right across the country, but also at these new Nightingale hospitals.

“This has been an extraordinary team effort on the part of nurses and doctors and therapists and pharmacists across London, but also volunteers and paramedics and people returning to help.

“And when these services are needed, they will be available beginning later this week, and because this is a global health emergency we’re actually seeing similar types of hospitals being established in Berlin and Madrid and New York.”

Sir Simon also said that NHS England will be able to double the number of coronavirus tests it has available for staff by the end of this week.
