Number of people shot in Chicago this year surpasses 1,400

CHICAGO _ Four men were killed and 23 people were wounded by gunfire in Chicago over the weekend as the number of people shot in the city this year surpassed 1,400.

The shootings stretched across Chicago, from Wicker Park to the Southeast Side between Friday afternoon and Monday morning.

So far this year, at least 1,433 people have been shot in the city, and there have been at least 246 homicides, according to data kept by the Tribune. Shootings and homicides remain down from 2016 and 2017, years of record-breaking violence, but are higher than other recent years. This time last year, at least 1,945 people had been shot; this time in 2012, 1,334.

One of the weekend homicides happened just before 12:20 p.m. Sunday in the 5500 block of West Haddon Avenue in the West Side's South Austin neighborhood. Marquell S. Hicks, 23, was shot twice in the chest in an attack that also injured a 19-year-old man.

Around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, a 32-year-old man was shot and killed by someone in a car in the 3000 block of West Jackson Boulevard.

Also on Sunday, Daniel J. Carter died hours after he was shot around 12:30 a.m. in the 11000 block of South State Street in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side.

The weekend's first homicide happened around 7:30 p.m. Friday when Titus L. Daily, 40, was shot and killed in the 9300 block of South Luella Avenue.

Among the other shootings, a 37-year-old man was wounded in the leg around 2:15 a.m. Sunday as he walked out of a Wicker Park bar, police said.

The final shooting this weekend happened just before 3 a.m. Monday on the Southeast Side. A 20-year-old man was shot in the face and groin in the 10700 block of South Avenue O, leaving a trail of blood through the block as he tried to get help.
