The number of people moving to the UK from non-EU countries is at its highest ever level, figures revealed yesterday.
Overall net migration to Britain was running at 240,000 in the year to September, according to the Office for National Statistics.
The difference between the numbers of people leaving and arriving was 212,000 in the year to June – meaning it has increased by 28,000.
But the annual total to September is slightly down on a year earlier when the total was 247,000, it was revealed.
Over the year to September 2019, 642,000 people moved to the UK and 402,000 people left.
Net migration from the EU fell to 64,000, while net migration from outside the bloc soared to a 15-year high.
More people than ever are coming from outside the EU, a total of 379,000.
The ONS’s Jay Lindop said: “Non-EU net migration has gradually increased since 2013 and is now at the highest level since 2004.”
Immigration Minister Kevin Foster said the new points system “will bring overall migration numbers down, while ensuring we continue to welcome the brightest and the best”.
