Number of people claiming unemployment benefits rises amid pandemic

The number of people claiming unemployment benefits in West Lothian increased to 6665 in May.

The number represents an increase of 0.9 per cent on the previous month.

West Lothian’s position (5.7 per cent) is, however, lower than the Scottish rate (6.2 per cent) and the UK rate (6.5 per cent).

But youth unemployment figures for West Lothian in May stood at 1330 (9.3 per cent) - higher than Scottish average of 8.3 per cent and UK average of 8.7 per cent.

Executive councillor for development and transport, Cathy Muldoon said: “West Lothian is no different from the rest of the country which is experiencing a hit on the economy and a dip in the jobs market due to the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak. West Lothian is still below the Scottish and UK average there are still 6665 people claiming unemployment benefits locally which provides cause for concern especially for those directly affected.

“The crisis is also having a negative impact on our young people. Unfortunately, on this occasion West Lothian is above the national average but rest assured addressing this matter is a top priority for the council and officers continue to work with partners and local businesses.

“The West Lothian Jobs Task Force has already met to discuss the current situation, national economic predictions and an action plan is being developed to ensure that as much support as possible is put in place to assist local companies and workers.”
