Number of people across Nottinghamshire 'pinged' by NHS Covid-19 mobile app up again

The number of people across Nottinghamshire who have been asked to self-isolate having been 'pinged' by the NHS Covid-19 app has increased.

In most areas of the county the number of contact tracing alerts sent out has risen.

In the week ending July 7 a total of 13,301 alerts were sent out to people informing them they must isolate, having come into close contact with someone who had tested positive for coronavirus.

As of the week ending July 21 (the latest available data), a total of 16,542 alerts had been sent out.

Every borough and district has reported a rise in alerts.

Nottingham, however, has recorded a lower number of 'pings', dropping from 5,217 as of the week ending July 7 to 4,981 in the week ending July 21.

Since February a total of 105, 717 alerts have been sent out to people all across the county, with the city recording - by a far margin - the most.

The situation is replicated nationally, with a record 689,313 alerts sent to users of the NHS Covid-19 app in England and Wales in the week to July 21.

While such numbers indicate high levels of infection, businesses have told of the issues that have arisen from staff isolating.

From August 16 those who have been double jabbed will not have to isolate, but the Government says it is the best way at present to keep infection rates down.

Contact tracing alerts are sent out via the NHS Covid-19 mobile application to a close contact of a positive case, which is determined using the built-in Bluetooth feature and it uses an algorithm to determine a close contact of a positive case, based on the Bluetooth signal strength, the length of time near to the other device, and the level of infectiousness.

People may also be contacted by NHS Test and Trace directly, usually via a contact number provided at a venue or event.

Contact tracing alerts for each borough and district in the week from July 15 to July 21 (in brackets, total since February 2021):

Ashfield: 1,550 (10,881)

Broxtowe: 1,620 (12,147)

Bassetlaw: 1,621 (8,650)

Rushcliffe: 1,629 (11,594)

Gedling: 1,759 (9,924)

Mansfield: 1,725 (9,393)

Newark and Sherwood: 1,657 (10,340)

Nottingham: 4,981 (41,471)

Total: 16,542 (105,717)
