Number of major roads affected as Storm Gerrit batters Scotland

STORM Gerrit has brought widespread disruption to Scotland’s roads with Traffic Scotland encouraging people to take care when out driving.

A number of roads are closed due to fallen trees, high winds, flooding and snow with a number of yellow warnings in place.

We previously told how a tree had fallen onto a railway line and caught fire in the Dumbarton area.

Road closures and disruption across Scotland

  • A82 at Inverlochy, Fort William is closed in both directions due to “adverse weather conditions” and a "number of fallen trees".
  • A82 Milton – Closed in both directions due to flooding. Local diversion via Greenhead Road and the A814 Glasgow Road
  •  A9 – Dalnaspidal – Closed in both directions. A9 also closed in both directions between Dunkeld and Ballinluig due to flooding.
  • A93 Spittal of Glenshee snow gates now closed

Traffic Scotland also reported a fallen tree was blocking the A90 southbound carriageway at the Bridge of Don and encouraged people to take care.

Meanwhile, Network Rail has imposed speed restrictions as travellers have been urged to check for cancellations.

ScotRail customer operations director Phil Campbell said: “We will be working closely with our colleagues at Network Rail Scotland to ensure we are able to keep moving as much as possible, but customers should also expect that their journeys will take longer than usual, and there could be some cancellations.”

The latest update from Network Rail Scotland said: “Due to reports of flooding on the West Coast mainline near Lockerbie, the route between Carlisle and Glasgow is currently closed.

“Services will be subject to alteration whilst our teams carry out inspections.”
